In late 2023, State Farm declared it would cease issuing new fire or liability property insurance policies in the state. Notably, 2% of State Farm policies statewide were not renewed last year.

 

What You Can Do: The California Fair Plan remains a solid option for those in high-risk areas. This plan is especially beneficial for individuals needing insurance for escrow closings, with the flexibility to explore alternatives once fire risks are fully addressed. The plan provides maximum coverage of $3 million, irrespective of replacement costs.

 

Homeowners should be aware that some insurance claims have been challenged or denied due to mismatches between the titleholder and the insurance policyholder. Complications can arise if a property's title is held in a trust while the insurance is under an individual’s name. It is advisable for homeowners to review their insurance status and ensure that the trust is added as an additional insured if necessary.
